Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs), also known as big bags, bulk bags are an ideal mid way solution between small (typically 25-50kg) sacks and true bulk. FIBCs are ideal for storing and transporting dry, 'flowable' products, for example sand, fertilizers, plastic granules and food products such as sugar and potatoes.
FIBCs are usually manufactured from woven polypropylene and may include either a lamination coating or a separate liner. Ventilated fabric that enables the product to breathe and prevents build up of condensation is also available. The carrying capacity is usually between 500kg – 1500kg however this will vary with the size of the FIBC and the density of the product. An average FIBC designed to hold 1000kg will typically weigh approximately 2.5kg.
Transporting and loading is done on either pallets or by lusing the lifting loops. Bags are made with either one, two or four lifting loops. The single loop bag is suitable for one man operation as there is no need for a second man to put the loops on the loader hook. Emptying is made easy by an opening in the base such as a discharge spout, of which there are several options. Alternatively the FIBC can be emptied by simply cutting it open.
